Where are my fellow book lovers? Please get in here!
Remember how I explained the feeling I get when I read books, in one of my previous posts? Catch up on the post here,
I refer to books as a treasured family heirloom because I remember that the first few years of my life and even long after that, were filled with lots of book gifts from my parents. In fact, one of them actually included a Mystic Dream Book which was apparently my dad’s before he handed it over to me. It evolved from picture books, to story books, novels, inspirational books, eBooks …
This made me to have an unquenchable thirst to always read almost anything in prints, that doesn’t have to do with politics anyway.
Some people would argue that the value of reading has declined considerably in recent times and they have attributed the main cause to be the growth of technology. Some others also consider eBooks as being a major distraction from encouraging people to read more books in prints and hard covers.
What most don’t know is that there are lots of things to benefit from reading. I intend to share some of mine with you.
So many movies have been adapted from books, but if you read a book and then watch its movie adaptation, you will agree with me that the book is a lot better than the movie. There is always that unique part like the cliff hanger, which most movies can never really capture with the same effect. That’s how I feel though; others may have different views.
Lots of books from the famous J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series to Danielle Steel books- my all time favorite and our very own Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun, interalia, have all been adapted into movies, good movies no doubt, but still the difference is so glaring!
Not that I’m giving the movie industries a bad name or anything, after all, some people’s all time favorite will always be movies.
No major side effects have been observed from reading. They are safe and easy to carry around. Although for eBooks, you may need a screen shield to protect your vision from the rays being emitted from the screens. I also try to change the settings to suit my viewing pleasure and environment. For instance, I change to night mode at night after lights out because it’s safer that way, as I always read myself to sleep.
I’m a strong advocate of the belief that reading gives one the scope to unleash their potential and creativity which watching movies don’t really do.
They are so entertaining and convenient. I mean you can read almost anywhere, in the plane, on your bed, at work, in a car, just name it.
It actually boosts self confidence too because you become informed on various aspects of life. And when you’re more confident, your productivity and delivery rates are boosted as well.
Research also shows that it makes one more empathetic and I think it’s true because by reading a book, you become a part of the story and feel the emotions of the characters. So go ahead and read that book because a world with more empathetic people will definitely be a better place to live in.
A good book improves your communication and writing skills. It improves vocabulary and develops critical thinking skills as well.
Above all, it’s my own perfect way of easing off stress while gaining knowledge and improving my imagination in the process.
What do you enjoy most when reading a book and what genre do you prefer?
Leave a comment and let me know! I am actually feeling generous and would give out a couple or two eBooks to interested people.
XOXO,
Yours Truly.
