The tranquil and serene atmosphere which is usually associated with the holidays always puts me in a frenzy mood to declutter and free up space.
Am I alone on this?
I just see this time as the perfect motivation I need to replace procrastination with direction and purpose because my house is my intimate space…
where I get to rest(when my little chair-ladies permit me to),
dream,
read,
pray
relax,
work in comfort,
gist,
meditate
and do lots of other related stuff.
I want to believe that everyone feels that way too, so you can imagine the discomfort that comes with living in a house filled with odds and ends.
Disclaimer: I don’t have a house that feels totally decluttered to me yet, I don’t know if that’s ever possible…but I’m working on it.
Have you ever noticed that clutter simply keeps piling up and if nothing is done about it quickly, it ends up smothering your peace of mind? It just has a way of affecting one emotionally as well as psychologically.
I’m actually feeling like a ‘Professional Declutter Analyst’ now when I say, ‘Stay with me while I take you on a declutter tour’ #LOL…
And Here Goes My Declutter Tour Rules:
First Rule Of Thumb:The thing about clutter is that once we begin to get used to them for a while, we tend to start seeing them as normal. So here’s what could work; Try to take a look at your house from an August visitor’s eye… Okay here is the reason why you should do so; An august visitor has never or rarely paid you a visit in the past. So when he/she eventually does, what first impression would you love to create in his/her imagination? You would definitely want her to see a perfect house. This is one of my greatest driving force when it comes to declutter.
That august visitor (whoever that is) has never made a debut in my house before though but it always helps me to put things in order and give myself a pat on the back after an accomplished task.
Second Rule Of Thumb: Creating the time is very important and that’s why I prefer to use periods when I don’t have to be at work. For instance, during bank holidays, weekends, vacations, Easter and Christmas breaks, e.t.c.
Third Rule Of Thumb: I always have a declutter bag where we gather lots of miscellaneous items. I use doubled up dust bin bags for this purpose. The good side to this is that it makes the work faster. However, there is a downside; if you are not careful, you may end up going through the bags all over again to be sure that you didn’t discard something of value.
Please, don’t succumb to that!
Experience has taught me that I end up putting back half of what I initially intended to thrash.
Fourth Rule Of Thumb: Charity plays a major role when I declutter. I try to think of some of the property we don’t need again which are still in good condition and the people who would need it more than I do. Knowing that you are doing it for a good course and to put a smile on someone’s face, is enough drive on its own.
Fifth Rule Of Thumb: Accept help where and when necessary. Again, experience has taught me better. There is no harm in accepting support from others as this will make the work faster and easier, especially if you have little girls whose major goal is to turn the house upside down LOL.
Sixth Rule Of Thumb: Take it one step at a time… You could start with a room a day or furniture today and shoes tomorrow and so on. You will be glad you did because believe me; it just makes every other chore seem so effortless.
Best of luck on your next declutter tour but until then, always remember to avoid procrastination as much as you can and give it a shot at your earliest convenience.
