The Arsenal I Use To Calm My Mum Nerves

Hey Lovelies,

If you’re stressed, overwhelmed or drained as a mum… you aren’t alone. After hearing from a few other mums, I’ve decided to share some of my experience in this post.

A few days ago, I went to see my project supervisor and I had to go with the girls because there was no adult to supervise them at home. We arrived early but ended up spending more time than I had envisaged. Be that as it may, I thought I came prepared!

However, hours outside with a Catastrothree, a Terrifiver, a Frankenseven and a teenager took its toll eventually and reminded me that you can never be all prepared with kids. As time for brunch approached, everything ramped up and my nerves were almost on fire. My attention was divided; and even the light refreshment I brought along for them to take while waiting in the car complicated matters with all the sugar rush. Not to mention observing social distancing with kids and other engagements that I had lined up for that day. It was almost like a daymare!

To the new mums in the house, know this; your kids will test their boundaries. They will yell, not just any yell but the -wake you up in the middle of the night- kind of yelling, stay awake way past bedtime, throw tantrums, indulge in sibling rivalry and even be picky eaters too. The list is endless and sometimes, as if these are not enough already, they may now decide to happen all at once. This is normal and we should try not to take them personally.

I had a talk with my mum recently and she gave me a rule which I have applied on a few occasions and it has been working for a while now. So if I start to get worked up in the midst of the entire hullabaloo, I walk out of the room before saying or doing anything.

Believe me, this works like magic, especially for the mums who don’t have any form of extra help. After I’ve calmed my nerves, I may then begin to think of a possible solution. I take a deep breath, pray, try to relax my muscles, and so on.

I know that what works for me may not work for all, but do whatever it takes to calm your nerves. Try these other easy go-to options too;

  • Send the children to their rooms if there is someone to supervise them.
  • Go for a walk
  • Clean like a maniac
  • Go for a drive
  • Scream into a pillow- Yes, I know someone who does this and it works for her TOTS. LOL
  • Take a power nap.

If motherhood leaves you emotionally exhausted, as it will do once in a while, just take a quick break to imagine you are hiking through the woods and exploring a new terrain. You have everything you need for a smooth hike but on your way back after the fun, you realize the route isn’t as clear anymore and you tend to be confused.

The good news is that on this motherhood hike, your instincts will give you the right judgment most of the time. Remember, motherhood is a blessing from God. It may sound surreal but one day, when the kids are all grown and independent, we will reminisce and miss all the so called ‘whammy’ that we think we may be receiving now.
