An Apple A Day, Keeps The Doctor Away!-Pun Unintended

by Nikimandi_Admin

Just like the saying goes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. It’s definitely no secret that apples are a great source of nutrient, especially the peels- Yes peels! which is actually a powerhouse for good health. I was actually surprised the day I found out because I know of people who prefer to peel apples just like oranges before taking them.

Speaking of health, has anyone experienced how caring for a sick child can be a daunting experience? You want to ensure the best for your child while being careful to decide whether to go to the doctor or not because every illness doesn’t necessarily require a trip to the hospital.

There are lots of conflicting priorities to consider when our kids are sick. From hoping they will recover quickly to wishing they would be in school so they don’t miss out on school activities and feeling guilty about missing work.

In a perfect world, kids would never get sick nor miss a day at school, but unfortunately, the world is so far from perfect.

I didn’t want to share this before but on a second thought, why not if not? Maybe some parents would learn a thing or two from this post.

Visit To The Doctor

Experienced parents would totally agree with me that despite being the best option, taking a sick child to the hospital and having the child hospitalized can make one feel so scared and worried. In fact, until recently, I have always fallen under the category of Nosocomephobia (term used to refer to the fear of hospitals). And this is coming from someone who actually wanted to study medicine and surgery many years ago. How would I have coped? *eyes rolling*

I remember being worried sick when my last daughter, Michelle, was admitted in a hospital few months ago. She had not even clocked 1 yet then and I had to spend two sleepless, endless nights with her. Sleepless- because as expected, sleep was the last thing on my mind…. That period was and is still a life record of my longest vigil yet. It was my first and hopefully would be my only experience of having a sick child admitted in a hospital ever again. *shivers at the thought*

It was such a challenging time for me as I had to figure out how to care for Michelle’s older siblings while I spent time in the hospital with her. Thankfully, I didn’t have to figure it out for long. I have my sister in love (the term I choose to refer to my sister in law) to be grateful to. She was a life saver at that point. Plus I was working and so needed to make arrangements and take permission from my place of work. In fact, I was pulled in several different directions all at once but kudos to Hubz for coming to the rescue… as usual.

Thank God all that is in the past now. As parents, especially mums, we play a major role in managing our children’s wellbeing. Mums particularly are expected to develop super powers that would empower us to know what’s normal and what’s not when it comes to our children’s health.

Home Treatment

Don’t Forget To Starve A Fever And Feed A Cold.

Fever is not a disease. Instead, it’s a symptom that accompanies illness and infection.

Going for the second option would entail allowing your child to rest it out at home. Make them comfortable and allow them to sleep as much as possible by ensuring the room is quiet and well ventilated. Checking up on the child is definitely the most important and not to be forgotten option. Keeping enough fluids (water ) handy is a wonderful idea as it goes a long way towards a successful recovery journey. Giving lots of fruits can never be over emphasized too.

From experience, I’ve found out that keeping foods simple at this stage is always the best option because naturally, the kid’s appetite will be reduced considerably.

Personally, I feel that home meds is not as safe as the hospital visits because not everyone would really know when to draw the lines on self meds and decide to call the doctor instead for clarification when in doubt. Trust your instincts and put a call to the doctor, especially if you notice interalia, some of the red flag symptoms like lethargy, persistent pain, and severe allergic reactions.

What are some of the best measures you put in place to attend to your sick child? Do you choose the hospital as your first go to option? And if you don’t, why or why not? Would love to know!
